ANCASTER, ONT: The Niagara College men's volleyball team (4-3) took on the Redeemer Royals (3-4) in a Friday night matchup that did not disappoint the fans. Following in the footsteps of the women's game before them, this was a 5-set match that had plenty of ups and downs for both squads, ultimately culminating in a win for the Knights. (set scores were 20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 24-26 and 15-9).
Big hits, diving saves, unbelievable digs and unexpected blocks – from start to finish, this game had it all. Trading points back and forth, the Knights fought hard but found themselves in a hole as they exited the first set with Redeemer taking the 1-0 lead. In the second set, the Knights once again found themselves chasing the Royals as Redeemer was able to pull ahead with a slight lead. However, this time, Niagara was able to put a pause on the Redeemer attack and bring the match to a 1-1 game draw. Moving into the third set, the Knights were able to build an early lead and fend off numerous attacks by the Royals, giving them the 2-1 set lead. A teeter-totter 4th set had everyone on their feet as fans tried to will their team to victory, ultimately having the Royals tie the game up and force a deciding 5th set. Niagara turned on the afterburners in the 5th set as they meticulously carved up the Royals defense, on route to a 6-point win. Middles, Riley Orr and RJ Martin, led the way for the Knights combining for 25 points on 15 kills, 8 blocks, 3 digs and 2 aces. Taiten Stifter was able to orchestrate Niagara's attacks throughout the match, handing out 38 assists and adding in 3 points on 2 kills, 12 digs and an ace. Lastly, don't let the stat sheet fool you as Noah Trembly only shows 6 digs on the night – his masterful defensive performance kept Niagara alive, allowing the offense to capitalize on key points throughout the game.
"That was an excellent compete level from the boys tonight," Steve Stone, head coach of the Niagara Knights, exclaimed when asked about the match. "They (the team) continued to adjust and fight, blow for blow with Redeemer – it's always fun playing in their barn. Everyone played a stellar game tonight, and we want to carry that momentum into next week."
