Knights Fall to Hawks

Knights Fall to Hawks

January 22, 2026

ETOBICOKE, ONT: The Niagara College women's volleyball team (7-6) travelled up the QEW to battle with the Humber Hawks (10-2) Wednesday evening.  The Knights weren't able to capitalize on their good start, as the Hawks were able to defeat Niagara 3-1 (set scores were 25-23, 13-25, 12-25 and 13-25).

Starting the match, the Knights quickly found themselves in a 9-2 hole.  After slowly clawing their way back, Niagara was able to pull themselves within striking distance in the middle of the set – finally tying things up at 23-23, before taking the final two points of the set and a 1-0 lead.  The Knights were able to carry that momentum into the 2nd set, as they took an early lead.  However, Humber quickly put a stop to that as they took control of the set and continued to build their lead – eventually taking the 2nd set and tying things up at one set apiece.  The third set had Niagara on their heels early on as they went down 8-0 and weren't able to muster up enough fight to get back into the set.  In the fourth set, the Hawks kept their foot on the gas pedal and didn't allow Niagara any wiggle room at all, ultimately taking the set and winning the match 3-1.  Megan Patterson and Emilie Dlouhy made play-after-play defensively, keeping the Knights' attack alive throughout the night, combining for 17 digs and Patterson chipping in with an assist.  Kyleigh Baxter could be found all over the court, contributing 6 points on 3 kills, 6 digs, 2 service aces and 1 block.

Steve Stone, head coach for the Knights, was a man of few words after the game, quickly mentioning that "the ladies came out with intent, a high compete level and took care of business in the first set."  When asked to elaborate on how the rest of the match went, Stone said "our receive broke down, we got too predictable offensively and couldn't execute down the stretch."

Niagara gets the weekend to rest up before preparing for the Redeemer Royals (8-3) on Wednesday, January 28th.  The game is set to start at 6pm at the Simplii Financial Athletic Center at the Welland Campus, where Niagara will be hosting their "Senior Night" for their graduating student-athletes.  If you aren't able to catch the action in person, be sure to tune into OCAA Live so you don't miss a thing.
