WINDSOR, ONT: The Niagara College women's volleyball team (5-1) took to the road once again as they headed to western Ontario to take on the St. Clair Saints (3-1). A 5-set thriller that had everyone on the edge of their seats, the Knights couldn't complete the reverse sweep, ultimately losing 3-2 (set scores were 13-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 16-18).
A game that began the way no Knights fans wanted to see, the Saints jumped to an early 2 set lead as Niagara couldn't figure things out on either side of the ball. Coming into the 3rd set, the Knights were able to find their drive and begin a comeback – dominating the 3rd set, winning by 9 points. The 4th set had both teams refusing to give an inch as the Saints were determined to close things out and the Knights were fighting to continue this match. Timely digs, big blocks and aggressive attacks had Niagara able to push it to a 5th and deciding set as they took the last 2 points of the set. The 5th set did not disappoint as both teams traded points back-and-forth, neither team able to take anything larger than a 2-point lead within the set. Alas, it was not to be for the Knights as St. Clair scored the last two points of the set to take the victory. Sam Cormier led the Knights with 19 points on 12 kills, 6 blocks, 3 digs, 2 assists and 1 ace. Keira Virostek followed close behind with 13 points of her own on 11 kills, 4 digs, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 ace. Libero, Megan Patterson, kept the Knights in this match contributing 23 digs and 3 assists.
"It was a tough loss on the road today – the ladies showed a lot of resilience after dropping the two opening sets and had their opportunity to put that one away," Steve Stone, head coach of the Knights began to say. "I love how they made adjustments and kept competing. There were few too many unforced errors late in that fifth set that cost us but we're in a good place."
The Knights return home on Saturday, November 15th to take on the Humber Hawks (4-0) at 6pm, as we celebrate our ReuKnighted Alumni Event. Come catch all the action at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus or be sure to tune into OCAA Live so you don't miss a thing.
