WELLAND, ON: The Niagara Knights women's volleyball team (9-5) jumped into 3rd
place in the OCAA West with a win over the Sheridan Bruins (1-13) Saturday afternoon
at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus. The Knights took a 3-0
sweep in this contest with set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.
The Knights came out firing on all cylinders and did not look back, winning the match in
straight sets and sending the crowd home happy. The afternoon match saw St.
Catharines athletes take over for the Knights with Abbey Gooder, Montanna Taylor and
Sam Cormier putting on a show for the crowd. Gooder, the 4th year outside hitter,
posted 17 points on 10 kills, 17 digs, 4 service aces, 3 blocks and 1 assist. 5th year
setter, Taylor, showed how dangerous she could be on the court by contributing 10
points on 5 kills, 26 assists, 9 digs, 3 blocks and 2 service aces. Not to be outdone by
her teammates, Cormier – the 2nd year middle – led the Knights with 18 points on 9 kills,
a hitting percentage of 42.1, 9 blocks, 3 assists and 3 digs.
Asking head coach of the Knights, Steve Stone, to reflect on the match he simply said
that he is "proud of the ladies' level of engagement and effort." Stone continued to say
that "they stayed levelheaded and executed the game plan, while taking care of
business."
The Knights will continue their homestand with two more games next week being played
at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus. The Conestoga
Condors (5-10) visit on Wednesday, January 22 nd for a 6pm game, where we will be
celebrating our graduating seniors before the game. A few days later, the Knights
welcome the St. Clair Saints (12-2) for another afternoon tilt at 1pm on Saturday,
January 25 th . Come on out and cheer your Knights onto victory!
