Knights Women’s Basketball Drop Final Game of the Regular Season

Knights Women’s Basketball Drop Final Game of the Regular Season

WELLAND, ON: The Niagara Knights women's basketball team (4-12) dropped their final home game of the regular season to the 3rd place Fanshawe Falcons (11-5) on Valentine's Day.  The Knights finish the regular season in 7th place in the West Division standings.

Poor shooting percentages from both teams in this game saw a very low-scoring basketball game as both teams struggled offensively.  We saw a slow start to this game with the first 2 points of the game being scored as free throws by the Falcons.  Baskets were traded back-and-forth for most of the 1st quarter; however the Falcons were able to go on a 10-0 run to end the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter was much of the same as the Knights struggled to get their offense going and the Falcons were able to go on a few small runs to increase their lead to 15 at the halfway mark.

The 3rd quarter is where the Knights really tried to turn it up, but the Falcons were able to keep up as both teams scored 17 points in this frame.  This game got a bit feisty in the 2nd half as we saw 2 unsportsmanlike and 2 technical fouls (1 each on each team) as the Knights tried to claw their way back into this game.  Unfortunately, they were not successful as they were outscored in 3 out of the 4 quarters.

Although a quiet game offensively for the Knights, the sharing was scored among many of the players as 7 of the 8 players who saw the floor scored in some fashion.  This was 1st year guard Emma Vendittelli's best game of the season as she scored 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  2nd year guard Lyric Shallow struggled to get the ball in the net tonight, scoring a season-low 5 points, but showed determination and grit under the basket reeling in 10 rebounds and 1 steal.  1st year centre Lilly Brown started her second game of the season as she starts to see more minutes.  She added 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block.

The Knights will play their first playoff game of the season as the head into the crossover round of the playoffs.  They will travel to Seneca College to take on the Sting with the game scheduled for 12pm on Sunday, February 22nd.  If you would like to follow along with our playoff run, all games can be live streamed at ocaalive.com.
