KING CITY, ONT: The Niagara College men's volleyball team (8-9) travelled just north of Toronto for their crossover playoff game against the East's #1 seed – the Seneca Sting (16-1). Entering the match as underdogs, the Knights were hoping to upset the Sting and punch their way to the next round. Unfortunately, the Sting had other plans as the Knights fell in straight sets, losing 3-0 (set scores were 15-25, 21-25 and 19-25).
The young Knights squad seemed a little nervous heading into this match as unusual errors gave Seneca an early lead. Being unable to dig themselves out of the early hole, the Knights headed into the 2nd set down 1-0. Niagara came out of the break and were able to find themselves on more stable ground, battling hard and taking an early 2nd set lead. However, this lead was short-lived as the Knights weren't able to prevent the pushback from the Sting – who eventually took the lead late in the set, going on to take a dominant 2-0 set lead. In the 3rd set, the Knights found themselves forcing some plays they normally wouldn't make, putting themselves back into a hole they had to work themselves out of. A valiant effort from the Knights was just not enough in this match, as Seneca was able to win the 3rd set and the game. Jack Drummond led the Knights with 11 points on 10 kills, 3 digs and 1 service ace. RJ Martin and Sam Guzak combined for 11 points on 5 kills, 6 digs, 3 blocks and 1 service ace.
"Hats off to Seneca – they came prepared and executed extremely well," said Steve Stone, head coach of the Niagara Knights. Stone continued to say, "the boys struggled to put balls away and put pressure on Seneca. What a great learning opportunity for a young group of boys that are coming back next year – the future is bright and I cannot wait to see what happens next season."
Niagara's early playoff exit ends the season the Knights. Taking some time off over the summer, the Knights will get back to work in the fall, with men's volleyball tryouts beginning in mid-September. Keep your eye on our website and socials for all updates regarding the 2026-2027 season.
