The Niagara Knights men's volleyball program (8-2, 2nd OCAA West) picked up an important West division win against the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-3, 4th OCAA West) on Thursday night. In a tightly contested match, the Knights topped the Mountaineers 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 26-28, 25-23).
Sameh Khodr (Kalamoun, Lebanon) led the way offensively with 20 kills, while Jeff Scott (Georgetown) added 17 of his own. Defensively the Knights out dug Mohawk 32-19 leading to a number of key offensive opportunities. Khodr and Nathan Snippe (St. Anns) led Niagara with eight digs apiece.
Head coach Nate Groenveld was pleased with the team's effort. "We won by relying on the aspects that we have put a lot of training and emphasis on," Groenveld said of the match, "As a group was nice to see."
Entering the second half of the season, the win was crucial for the Knights to keep pace with the leaders at the top of the OCAA West division standings. The Knights now sit tied for second place in the standings with Redeemer (8-3, 2nd OCAA West) and are just two games behind Fanshawe (10-2, 1st OCAA West) for first with two matches in hand.
Niagara will now travel to Windsor for a 2015 OCAA Championship rematch matchup at 4:00 pm on Sunday against the St. Clair Saints (6-4, 5th OCAA West). They will return home for a date with the undefeated Humber Hawks (7-3, 5th OCAA West) on Wednesday, January 20th at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre at 8:00 pm.
