The 2012-2013 Niagara Knights men's volleyball season is set to begin and excitement surrounding the program is high. Niagara College will serve as host for the 2013 Canadian College Athletic Association Men's Volleyball Championship from March 7th to 9th. As host team the Knights will receive an automatic qualification in the event.
In preparation for the national tournament, Head Coach Nathan Groenveld and the rest of the Knights coaching staff increased the team's recruiting efforts and added seven top athletes to an already talented roster.
Groenveld calls the Knights recruiting class "extremely athletic and ready to come in and compete at the highest level. While this will take some adjustment on the part of the players, we as a coaching staff are confident it will be a smooth process and the sky is the limit for this great recruiting class."
Recent years have seen the Knights place no better than 4th in the OCAA's West Division. Last season saw the Knights finish with a 5-13 record, placing them 8th in their division.
With an influx of new talent for 2012-2013, the Knights will look to compete for an OCAA medal, a prize that has eluded the team since the 2004 season.
The men's volleyball team will make their home and season debut on Saturday November 3rd at 8:00pm against the Nipissing Lakers. The event comes as part of a busy weekend of varsity sport at the Niagara College Welland campus athletic centre. The venue will see the women's volleyball and men's basketball teams also in action.
