HAMILTON, ON: The Niagara College women's basketball team (9-1) travelled to Mohawk College on Saturday afternoon for their first game of the second half of the 2024-2025 varsity season. The Hamilton-Niagara rivalry was in full swing with the game coming down to the final minutes and the Knights ultimately pulling off the win with a final score of 66-61. This win continues Niagara's 6-game winning streak and maintains their position as t-1st in the OCAA West division standings.
This was a very back and forth game with 6 lead changes, 3 in the 1st quarter alone, and no lead larger than 9 points held by either team. The Knights were down by 5 points after the 1st quarter and did not take that lightly, coming back to outscore the Moutaineers 22-8 in the 2nd. Mohawk had a strong 3rd quarter but ran into foul trouble late in the 3rd as well as in the 4th quarter, and ultimately that was the difference maker in this game.
Fourth years Janee Harrison and Jamira Rousseau saw the most minutes, playing 36 and 35 respectively. Janee's stat line was the most impressive, scoring 16 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Fourth year Taryn Mitchell also had a strong game, contributing 16 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal of her own. Third year guard and 6th woman Aisja Strachan was not to be out done as she added 12 points of her own, shooting a perfect 5-5 from the floor. She also contributed 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 4 steals to the game.
The Knights will only have a few days to rest and prepare for their next matchup which will be at Sheridan College on Wednesday, January 15th.
